These cases illustrate the significant aggression within the Russian response, with Russia acting decisively and decidedly in contravention of international law and in breach of their guarantees regarding Ukraine ( Allison, 2017). The annexation of Crimea caught both the United States and European states by surprise, but the impact regarding regional and European security was quickly felt ( Larrabee et al., 2015 Dolya, 2016) similarly, the Donbas conflict was said to have changed Europe ( Matveeva, 2022). However, the Russian response to the events of 2014 saw considerable and significant subnational variation. Russia under Putin is said to have evolved increasingly as an assertive country, which very aggressively pursues its interests domestically, regionally and globally ( Rezvani, 2020), and had become more militarily aggressive since 2007 ( Quinlivan, 2014), with wars like Georgia 2008 representing the logical culmination of this strategy ( German, 2009). ![]() This article seeks to explain the behaviour of the Russian Federation in reacting to the events of the Ukrainian revolution, sometimes referred to as The Revolution of Dignity or Euromaidan Revolution, focusing on the years immediately following this revolution. The focus on loyalty to the Kremlin and the issue of willingness to collaborate is revealing. The article finds the crucial differences to be the level of loyalty to the Kremlin and willingness to engage in collaboration or cooperation. Finally, these two elements are reconciled, producing a clear picture of the overall similarities, the inconsistencies and the crucial differences. Then cases involving significant aggression are considered, before moving on to those seemingly involving inaction or even restraint.
